STATEMENT: Following Historic House Vote, the Senate Must Listen to the Voices of the American People and Pass the Build Back Better Act, Says CAP’s Patrick Gaspard

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the Build Back Better Act. Following the vote, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:

This is a long-awaited moment that brings us a step closer to transformational and lasting progress for hardworking Americans.

The Build Back Better Act is the most consequential piece of economic legislation in a generation. Whether by driving down costs of everyday essentials such as energy, prescription drugs, and child care; creating good-paying jobs; opening access to appropriate home- and community-based services; or urgently protecting our world from the ravages of climate change, the Build Back Better Act will benefit every single person in this country.

At the same time, it is transforming millions of individual lives. This act will usher in a new era of shared growth, with reforms that bring equity to tax collection, as it’s all paid for by making wealthy corporations and individuals who have been skirting tax laws for years pay their share.

While House passage of such a monumental bill is in itself historic, the American people have waited long enough to see good policy ideas turn into real, tangible programs that will improve their lives and livelihoods. It’s critical for the Senate to take up their responsibility for the common good by expeditiously passing the Build Back Better Act.
