CAP Changemakers: Equality for All

This conversation with Cait Smith and Winnie Stachelberg highlights CAP’s role in developing the Equality Act and current strides to make the country and world more equitable for LGBTQI+ communities.

“CAP Changemakers” is a new series of compelling conversations in which current and former Center for American Progress staff share the inside stories behind the building of progressive policies that have improved the lives of everyday Americans throughout the 20 years of CAP’s history.

Please join us for the next event of the series, “Equality for All,” featuring CAP Director of LGBTQI+ Policy Cait Smith and U.S. Department of the Interior Senior Advisor and Infrastructure Coordinator—and former CAP Executive Vice President of External Affairs—Winnie Stachelberg.

In this conversation, coordinator Stachelberg shares how she advocated for the House of Representatives’ passage of the historic Equality Act while at CAP. The Equality Act, a landmark piece of legislation, would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and other federal civil rights laws to extend protections to all Americans on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation and to update protections for women, communities of color, and people of faith. Smith and Coordinator Stachelberg will also discuss the future of the Equality Act and how expanding protections for LGBTQI+ Americans strengthens protections for us all.
