STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden on Articles of Impeachment Introduced Against President Donald Trump

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today regarding the articles of impeachment introduced against President Donald Trump:

The evidence laid out in the impeachment hearings of the last several weeks is overwhelming: Donald Trump extorted a foreign country to interfere in our elections. The consensus from legal experts was unanimous: this type of behavior is impeachable. In fact, concerns about a president inviting foreign interference in U.S. affairs is one of the reasons the founders created impeachment in the first place. Trump abused the power of the presidency to pressure a foreign country to investigate a political rival—and then sought to cover it up. This behavior disgraces the very concept of public service.

By using the power of his office to extort a foreign country into interfering in our elections, Trump sought to deprive Americans of a free and fair election in 2020. The U.S. House of Representatives has undertaken a meticulous impeachment process, and now it must act—for the sake of our democracy now and in the future. The time will soon come for all members of Congress to consider their oath to this country.
