STATEMENT: Neera Tanden on Supreme Court’s McCutcheon Decision

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission struck down the aggregate limits on the amount that an individual donor can contribute to candidates, political parties and political action committees. Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The McCutcheon decision gives the wealthiest in our nation even more unchecked and unbalanced control over our democracy. The ruling completely disregards the significant influence that money has on our political system and creates even more loopholes that allow the very rich to avoid campaign finance laws. This radical decision by the Roberts Court went out of its way to ignore established law and, as the dissent characterized it, eviscerates the campaign finance laws that Congress imposed on itself. This case, along with Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission before it, stacks the deck against the will of the people. Unless Congress moves forward on legislation that tips the scales back in favor of all Americans, for big money donors – just like in billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s casinos – the house will always win.
