David Madland

Director of the American Worker Project

Dr. David Madland is the Director of the American Worker Project at American Progress. He has written academic articles and books as well as op-eds and commentaries on a range of economic issues, including retirement, economic insecurity, health care, campaign finance, taxes, and public opinion. He has a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University and received his B.S. from the University of California at Berkeley. Madland's dissertation was about the political reaction to the decline of the defined benefit retirement system.

Prior to joining American Progress, Madland helped lead a range of advocacy campaigns as a consultant to labor unions and environmental organizations. Previously, he worked for Congressman George Miller (D-CA) on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce as well as the Resources Committee. He was Political Director of the environmental organization Save the Bay, Policy Director for the taxpayer watchdog Taxpayers for Common Sense, and Research Director for Michela Alioto for Congress.
